About Theater
of the Grasshopper
"The
Grasshopper asked the Ants for a few grains of corn. 'May we ask
what you were doing with yourself last summer? Why didn't you
collect a store of food for the winter?' 'The fact is,' replied
the Grasshopper, 'I was so busy singing that I hadn't the time.'
'If you spent the summer singing,' said the Ants, 'you can't do
better than spend the winter dancing.'
--Aesop's Fables
Iris Rose launched Theater of the Grasshopper in October 2008 with the production Mutti's After Supper Stories. Mutti was created for Noelle McGrath DePaula and her children Lily, Juliet and Colin. The original songs were written and performed by Hugh Hales-Tooke.
Theater
exists only in memory. A videotape, a film, or a photograph of a performance is only
a record; it cannot replace the experience of
being there, sharing the moment with other live human beings. Theater
is unrepeatable, except in the mind. It is the goal of Theater of
the Grasshopper to create indelible moments that remain with the
audience long after they have left the theater.
